What happens if my PSA is raised?

If your PSA is raised, our specialist nurse will call you, and arrange for you to be referred to the local hospital to see a specialist.
You should be contacted within 2 weeks of being referred to the hospital, so it is important that you are available.
When you are seen, the hospital team will usually arrange for a scan of your pelvis using an MRI scanner to look for any abnormal areas in the prostate gland. This scan is called a multi-parametric MRI scan.
Depending on the results, the hospital doctor may either:
- explain that you do not need any more tests
- ask you to think about having a prostate biopsy

An MRI scan may not be possible if you have a pacemaker or other metal inside your body so other investigations will be used to determine if you have prostate cancer or not.
